Monitoring of fish and shellfish in the waters off Futaba County
Last year, we conducted monitoring of seafood off the coast of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. We will publish the results on our website. This monitoring, conducted with the cooperation of Captain Ishii (of the Choei Maru), representative of the Tomikuma Fisheries Association, involved four trips between March and May in which fish were caught offshore from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The fish were then measured for radioactivity on board and the results compiled. Once this monitoring method is established, we will eventually depart Tomioka Fishing Port and catch fish in the waters off Futaba County, where they will be measured live (non-destructive testing). Anglers will then immediately confirm the level of radioactive contamination and bring that information back to share with others. Those who hear the information will then return to Tomioka Fishing Port to fish and learn about the environment, and the situation will be confirmed. We hope that this cycle will help dispel harmful rumors and increase the number of visitors. We will also simultaneously disseminate accurate information online in an easy-to-understand format. We sincerely hope that Tomioka Fishing Port will become an important facility for environmental education and leisure activities in addition to its original function as a fishing port. Although the method has not yet been established, we would like to continue working on this in cooperation with the relevant parties. We believe that the information we obtain will be extremely important 20, 30, ... 50 years from now. When I visited Chernobyl a few years ago, I was reminded of the importance of steadily accumulating raw data. Please see below for an overview of the monitoring, methods, results, etc.
