3D surveying technology is being used to preserve the cultural heritage of the Machu Picchu ruins, and new archaeological sites have been discovered in the dense jungle.

Futaba Co., Ltd. is collaborating with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Peruvian Ministry of Culture to participate in cultural heritage preservation projects around the Machu Picchu World Heritage Site.

In this project, we utilized our accumulated high-precision three-dimensional surveying and analysis technology using UAV-LiDAR to conduct surveys that visualize the surface shape and potential archaeological remains in densely forested areas without clearing the forest.
As a result, we were able to confirm several new archaeological sites beneath the dense jungle, which had previously been difficult to locate. Furthermore, we have achieved results that contribute to both the preservation of cultural heritage and the safety of tourists.

Following the Great East Japan Earthquake and the subsequent nuclear accident, our company has been working on 3D archiving to record and preserve the townscapes and topography of areas that became inaccessible to people due to the nuclear accident, in order to pass them down to future generations. The technology and expertise we have to safely and efficiently acquire data even in environments inaccessible to people and to construct highly accurate 3D models are also being utilized in the research of the Machu Picchu ruins in this project.

This initiative represents a valuable achievement that will greatly empower future efforts, as it demonstrates how technologies cultivated in Japan contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage worldwide, while simultaneously applying the knowledge gained overseas to the fields of cultural property preservation, disaster prevention, and tourism in Japan.
