Tomioka Wine Volunteer Activity (February 11th)
Despite the snowfall yesterday, about 30 volunteers participated. The work involved transporting and placing compost to improve the soil in the Tomioka Station East Field (about a 3-minute walk from Tomioka Station on the JR Joban Line). Approximately 1,600 bags of 20kg compost were needed. It was quite a back-breaking job. Three university students (a second-year student at Hirosaki University (Aomori Prefecture), a third-year student at Akita International University (Akita Prefecture), and a third-year student at Doshisha University (Kyoto Prefecture)) who are interning at Futaba Co., Ltd. for about three weeks from the 9th also participated, and the power of young people is invaluable.
Starting next weekend, soil improvement work will begin on approximately 0.8 hectares of farmland. Approximately 2,400 seedlings will be planted on March 26th and 27th. The Tomioka Station East field will exceed 1 hectare this year, with approximately 4,000 trees. In Tomioka town, there will be 5,500 trees. The field is gradually expanding, and its presence as a vineyard is increasing. I'm looking forward to the view from the train window.
