Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Sea Area Monitoring
On Sunday, November 9th, I accompanied Umi Labo, a group conducting citizen-level environmental monitoring of the sea area surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (1F). They collected seabed sediment and fished about 1km offshore from 1F. The collected sediment and caught fish will be measured for radioactive contamination at Iwaki Aquamarine. Apparently, only one fish exceeded 100 becquerels in the past six measurements. This experience reaffirmed the importance of continually understanding the current state of the sea area at the citizen level and communicating that information in an easy-to-understand manner.
