What kind of work are you currently in charge of?
We are involved in road restoration in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and in areas where evacuation orders have not yet been lifted.
It's been three years since I joined Futaba after graduating from my local Fukushima University. Before joining the company, I had the image that "civil engineering = doing earthy work," but I was surprised at the breadth of the work, which includes not only being active on-site but also desk work such as design and data processing.
I am currently a member of the design team, and am involved in road restoration in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and in areas where evacuation orders have not yet been lifted. I have also had the opportunity to experience a wide range of other work, including inspecting bridges and water storage facilities that supply water to rice fields.
What is your impression of the company now that you have actually joined?
By developing the infrastructure, people will return to the town. I feel a sense of responsibility and pride in being able to do this kind of work.
Nearly 10 years have passed since the disaster, and while there are areas where people are living as if the earthquake and nuclear accident never happened, there are also areas where roads have not been restored to their original state, and there are areas where it is difficult to return. When I see such scenes, I sometimes feel sad and think that "the disaster is not over," but it is people like us who are supporting the restoration of roads and the reconstruction of towns, and it is by our efforts to develop the infrastructure that people will return to the towns. I feel a sense of responsibility and pride in being able to do this kind of work.
I had the opportunity to travel along the coast of Fukushima Prefecture for work and see the various situations there, but I don't think I would have been able to see these situations if I hadn't joined Futaba.
Please tell me your future goals.
Creating a town that makes people think, "I want to come back, I want to live here."
In the future, I think it will be important to create an environment where people who have left their hometowns can return and live there again. I believe that the mission of "Futaba" is to create a nostalgic yet new town where people can return to nature.
Rather than just restoring the town, I want to create a town that is attractive to new people who move here, so that they will want to come back and live here.
